COMIC CONS UPDATE 2025
This year’s conventions were a bit sparse compared to previous years due a variety of reasons. However, the two conventions we did attend were amazing!
Plastic City Comic Con, held on August 23rd, at the Hilton Double Tree Hotel in Leominster, MA is one of our favorite shows to attend. The Plastic City Comic Con was established in 2016 by Keith Gleason and his lovely wife Amy Kuktka-Gleason. Their mission was to offer a family friendly affordable show every year with the focus on comics, creators and artists. Although the Plastic City Comic Con has grown in size over the years, they have kept true to their mission. Hero Shack has participated in this event for the past three years and have always had a great time! With repeat customers, families who are having fun and other creators who are like minded, this is an event you do not want to miss. I know that we plan to attend next year and we hope that you do as well!
Retro Expo was initially on our list of venues to attend, but due to medical reasons we were unable to make it. Held on September 6th, at the Longplex Family and Sports Center in Tiverton, RI, the event was a success according to our creator friends who attended. We hope to make it next year!
Athol Library and Hero Shack Comic Book Fest, held on Saturday, October 18th at the Athol Town Hall is always an exciting event for us. Not only because the event co-sponsored by the Athol Library and Hero Shack but it is an event which focuses on introducing families to the art of comic books and reading. This is the fourth year the Comic Book Fest has run and it was by far our best year yet. With over 200 attendees and a host of amazingly talented artists, comic book creators and more, this family friendly event also offers a cosplay contest and interactive tables the guests can participate in. This year, we had our first Sketch Off, which was run by Johnny C. The Sketch Off pairs two artists together and when the drawing prompt by Johnny, and in five minutes must present their best drawing. The audience votes for the best drawing and the winner moves on to the next round. This event brought a new level of excitement to the Comic Book Fest.
The Comic Book Fest was given birth when Hero Shack reached out to Athol Public Library to ask if they would allow their comic book series The Great Cyclopian, to part of the circulation. One thing led to another the meeting turned into planning the first ever Comic Book Fest! We are excited for next year because it will be our fifth year running this event and we are so thankful for the Athol Public Library, as well as the Mass Cultural Council (Athol) and the community partners for helping with this event. Watching our community come together in such a fun way is truly inspiring and we can’t wait for next year!
